The suspected viral haemorrhagic fever outbreak in Ethiopia was reported in the South Ethiopia Region with eight suspected cases so far. Health authorities, supported by the World Health Organization (WHO), are investigating and responding to the outbreak. WHO has deployed a multidisciplinary team and provided medical supplies, including personal protective equipment and an isolation tent. Laboratory testing is ongoing at the Ethiopia Public Health Institute to identify the exact cause. Viral haemorrhagic fevers are a group of epidemic-prone diseases caused by various viruses like Marburg, Ebola, Crimean Congo haemorrhagic fever, and Lassa fever. These diseases typically start with symptoms like fever, fatigue, muscle aches, and exhaustion, and can potentially spread from person to person. WHO has released emergency funds to assist the response and emphasizes the need for immediate notification of any such cases to prevent further transmission.
